Keith, thanks for sharing the article about the woman who taught an adult Bible class teacher in a Baptist church for many years and then was summarily terminated.
I read an interesting article in today's Houston Chronicle about slavery and the Civil War and how the nation was divided over how to interpret scriptures that dealt with slavery. The article, as well as the book described in it, might be of interest to other readers of this blog. I couldn't help but notice parallels between the slavery issue and the gender issue.

I'm not Baptist-bashing - far from it; the very same thing almost could have happened within my fellowship of churches of Christ - but I'm still not sure I'd have believed it if I hadn't seen it on network news tonight:
81-Year-Old Sunday School Teacher Fired For Being Female
Parishoner Meeting Planned
She teaches an adult Sunday school class, you see. And her new young pastor has convinced the diaconate board she is not qualified, based on the 3rd Edition New Oxford translation of 1 Timothy 2:12 ("I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent.")
After 54 years of teaching various Sunday school classes, and this one since 1995.
- I said "almost" because she would never have been permitted to teach an adult class in most churches of Christ.
Yet we would permit her to comment in a discussion class; would welcome the depth of her years of wisdom - even if a woman is to keep silence. Or she could teach up to a certain age of boys. Or until they were baptized, at which point they presumably have their bar mitzvah and become men.

I'm not sure if you all have already seen this list, but I thought it was quite humorous. Click here to read 'Why Men Should Not Be Ordained.' shalom!

Hey friends, if you've tried to access the site in the last couple of days, you've probably noticed we've had some technical difficulties. These occurred while yours truly was updating some of our content. We are working to fix the issues. Thanks for your patience!
