Julie, no problem. I just wanted to head off any Nancy Grace-type speculation on the blog before it started. :-)

Sorry Chad...I was trying to say exactly what you are saying but it must've come out wrong. I was saying that we don't know what happened but that I couldn't dispute the fact that we still have a patriarchal system. We have been portrayed so many ways in the last several days and so far, none of them have been good.

Julie,
This terrible incident came up in my Sunday lunch conversation. I know details are still few and a lot of speculation has been forthcoming. Right now we should be in prayer for Mary, the girls, the extended family and church that this has affected.
I think, however, we should be hesitant to draw a necessary link between this and the patriarchal practices of Churches of Christ, especially when we don't know the whole story. There are a range of possible responses to patriarchy, as well as a range of formative results (i.e. not everyone who's experienced patriarchy becomes a murderer; one might rather become an activist). It's important to examine particular cases before making a wide-ranging generalization. There may be a direct link in this case, but again, let's proceed with caution until more is revealed.
What this situation does give us is the opportunity to reflect on how gender hierarchies can conspire to create tragic events, which might be helpful to the readers of this forum. So people, any thoughts?

This whole story about Mary Winkler and the murder of her husband has brought up some old stuff for me about the Church of Christ. I have read some blogs that are talking about what they know the Church of Christ to be...some are way off base and some are right on....one that was right on was a journalist who had one set of grandparents from the Church of Christ and he stated that out of all the fundamentalist groups that Churches of Christ still maintained one of the most patriarchal systems still in existence. So true. I want the other pieces to the puzzle of this murder. It doesn't make sense with the information that we have...except what we infer...and I am sure that we can make up millions of scenarios. I am praying for Mary Winkler and those three little girls...how tragic!

A hundred years from now, women will remember Don Marco Valentini, a 39-year-old parochial vicar of the Church of San Girolamo a Corviale in the Diocese of Rome. At a meeting with other priests of his diocese on March 2, Don Marco asked his bishop, who happens to be Pope Benedict XVI, why not include women in the governance of the church? ...
